La ville s'étend sur 2,825 kilomètres carrés à la confluence de la rivière Mukha et du canal Vets, formant la source de la rivière Mukhavets.
L'établissement, connu sous le nom de Dobuchyn en 1487, a reçu sa charte municipale en 1589 d'Anna Sforza, avec un blason représentant un serpent bleu.
La population de 41,603 habitants comprend des Biélorusses, des Russes, des Ukrainiens et des Polonais, avec le biélorusse utilisé par 65 pourcent.
