Le district couvre 615 kilomètres carrés en Pologne centrale, comprenant un centre urbain et quatre municipalités rurales avec 43,000 habitants.
Le territoire est devenu un district administratif officiel en 1999 suite aux réformes gouvernementales polonaises restructurant les divisions territoriales locales.
